Most people know garlic because for its noticeable scent. But did you know that this member of the onion family is actually really good for you? It can do a number of positive things for your health! The antioxidants contained in garlic can lower your blood pressure because antioxidants maintain flexibility of arteries and blood vessels. According to the Anti-Aging Clinic, Inc of Florida, garlic was used to treat arteriosclerosis (hardening of the arteries) by the Egyptians and earliest Chinese dynasties, in folk medicine. As far back as the first century AD, Dioscorides wrote of its ability to “clear the arteries.” Some studies have shown that eating garlic can reduce the risk of stomach cancer and cardiovascular disease. And of course, garlic is good because of the flavor it adds to any dish! It is commonly known as “Italian candy” because it is in nearly all Italian recipes. Garlic can flavor food without raising your blood pressure, as can its sister foods, onions and chives.
What Other Effects does Garlic Have?
Did you know it can help with hair growth? Supposedly if you ingest 1-2 cloves a day, you hair will grow faster! It can also be used for skin irritation, including acne. When garlic is added to Aloe Vera plant extract and mineral water and applied to the skin, it can be used for all types of skin irritations. Garlic is also known to be an antibiotic because it contains allicin. Allicin is a powerful antibiotic with anti-hyperlipidemic activity (it is also responsible for the smell associated with garlic). Los Angeles doctor, Richard DeAndrea, says it can be used locally on cuts and scrapes for the protecting antibiotic effect, but it may sting like alcohol.
How Do You Get Rid of the Garlic Smell?
According to a chef at the Pritikin Longevity Center & Spa, you can wash your hands with lemon juice if the garlic smell won’t wash off. If it’s your breath you’re worried about, then try sticking a slice of raw tomato in your mouth for a few seconds. Sounds funny, but he swears by it! Another option is to try gargling with pineapple juice.
How Much Garlic Should I Eat?
Studies have shown there is no specific amount of garlic that you should consume. Many doctors we spoke with gave answers ranging from a half a clove a day to 2 cloves a day. The main thing to remember is to have some everyday! And don’t be fooled, garlic pills will not produce the same positive health effects, so stick with the real thing!
